Legacy Conversations

Established in 2001, Legacy Conversations feature pre-eminent poets and scholars who have played historic roles in African American poetry. Moderated discussions address historical, aesthetic, political and personal influences on their craft and thought. Programs include brief readings, Q & A and book signings.

Poet, playwright and novelist Steve Cannon is the author of the best-selling novel Groove, Bang and Jive Around. In 1991, he converted a portion of his Lower East Side apartment into an informal salon which later became A Gathering of the Tribes, an arts and cultural organization dedicated to excellence in the arts from a diverse perspective. An institution in New York's multicultural artistic community since 1962, Cannon continues to support innovative literary, musical and artistic expression.
