Rose O'Neill Literary House Residency

Beginning in July 2011, The Washington College/Rose O'Neill Literary House will provide a month-long residency in historic Chestertown, Maryland annually to one Cave Canem fellow.

While in residence, the Washington College/Rose O'Neill Literary House fellow will teach a one-day workshop for high school writers as part of the LitHouse summer program, and give a reading from their work. The fellow will be awarded the use of a private single-family residence for the entire month of July, along with a $500 honorarium for living expenses.

Located on Maryland's Eastern Shore, Washington College is routinely visited by poets, graphic novelists, playwrights, rock critics, investigative journalists, and studio artists for events, symposia, and fellowships. Recent guests include John Barth, Junot Díaz, Nuruddin Farah, Neil Gaiman, Philip Gourevitch, Claudia Rankine, Patricia Smith, Hannah Tinti, and Natasha Tretheway. The Rose O'Neill House was founded by Washington College English Professor emeritus Robert Day in 1970. The creative writing culture so much in evidence at the Rose O'Neill Literary House is grounded in Washington College's historic commitment to fostering a vibrant writing community. In collaboration with the English Department, the Sophie Kerr Committee, and the PEN World Voices Festival, the LitHouse hosts a dynamic array of readings, lectures and student-centered workshops with writers from across America and around the globe.
